The Moroccan aesthetic is quite possibly one of the greatest celebration of the senses, when it comes to interiors.
With a focus on textiles, calming scents, and loose-leaf lemon tea kind of warmth, the souk style is one that needs to be authentic to be done right. I don’t always believe there is a right and wrong when it comes to interiors, of course, but there is certainly an art to curating a culturally-inspired look, whilst avoiding the “bought this in a souvenir shop 2015” trap. It’s a fine line, for sure.
That’s why I’m so very pleased to introduce you to SO Marrakech, an authentic Moroccan homeware and accessories concept store, now open in Altrincham, South Manchester.
About SO Marrakech
SO Marrakech was founded in 2018 by Anissa Damoussi, who I had the absolute pleasure of meeting at the launch of her new Altrincham location. On a mission to create a truly bona fide Moroccan offering, Anissa has a strong affinity with the North African hotspot.
“I feel particularly lucky to have such a close connection with Morocco, a country that has inspired me creatively for many years. During my time there, I have formed fantastic relationships with some of the best craftspeople across the country, from basket and carpet weavers, to glassware makers, carpenters and artists. SO Marrakech has given me the opportunity to share the talents of these artisans, by showcasing collections of some of my favourites pieces, handpicked by myself in Morocco”

Where is SO Marrakech?
Anissa has chosen well for her new location. I grew up in Altrincham and as my teenage years saw the opening of nearby Trafford Centre, it was sad to see Altrincham become a ghost town, unable to compete. Over the past few years, thanks to the regeneration of Altrincham markets, we’re seeing more independent business flourish here, many of them with an artisan allure.
Makers are taking to the market stalls, and units are being filled again after a period of time laying dormant. It’s a great addition for the high street revival.
“Marrakech is my second home and I hope people enjoy experiencing a little piece of this magical City in Altrincham, as much as I look forward to joining the thriving community and mission to revive the high street with independent retail.”

What does SO Marrakech sell?
So what exactly can you get in the store? The forward-thinking brand and its passionately creative founder have a focus on combining natural materials, sustainability and centuries’ old techniques with a modern Moroccan aesthetic.
In reality that means you can get just about everything in the world of decor, but not stacked up as if you’re in the supermarket. No, this is an experience as much as it is a store. A taste of Morocco for those who might not have had the pleasure of breathing it in for themselves.
A sip of complimentary Moroccan tea on arrival and a continuous cloud of jasmine welcomes customers, inviting you to sit and touch, and really absorb the concept offered. After all, design isn’t just about looking good, it’s about how a space makes you feel. SO Marrakech executes this perfectly.
Anissa’s mixed Moroccan and English heritage has seen her explore the country with her family from an early age, spending a lot of time in Marrakech, so with her hand-selected stock comes experience and rich admiration for this exotic culture.
In store you can get your hands on storage baskets, basket bags, lanterns, richly pigmented tagines, ceramic tile trivets, woven placemeats, leather pouffes, deep piled rugs, tasseled blankets, and loads more! This is just a taste of what I managed to snap a picture of.
See anything you fancy?
I’ve only taken away a candle thus far but have my heart set on, let’s face it, all of the rugs. As soon as I can decide which one, I’ll be back to happily support this beautiful independent. Do let me know if you end up doing the same.
You can find SO Marrakech at 123 George St, Altrincham, WA14 1RN or visit the website at SO-marrakech.co.uk
