I cannot tell you how excited I am for Autumn. I know that I usually get overly excited about a certain event in December (don’t worry, I won’t mention the C word just yet…) but honestly, Autumn is just such a wonderful time, isn’t it?
As the sun starts to lower, colours become saturated in nature and the air truly fresh. It makes for the most incredible light for images, as well as great weather for getting some much needed fresh air before the outdoor chill turns bitter (hello pumpkin picking!). I can parade my soft scarf collection proudly, and come home to a toasty entrance hall. I honestly adore this season. All the feels.
Back inside, October is the time we do a big refresh of the house. I know the big clean of the year is named after Spring, but as Winter hosts all our families birthday and Christmas (oh wait, turns out I AM going to mention the C word), then it just makes sense to get spruced up.
If you think this is going to be a post about needing to buy loads of seasonal stuff to sit in a box for the rest of the year though, think again. I personally think it’s time we started consuming more consciously, picking pieces that can be adapted throughout any season. Here are our household favourites that take centre stage in Autumn.
Pumpkin Spice On Everything
We all love candles. This isn’t groundbreaking advice to get those candles lit, but if you’re looking for brands to last the entire season, Makers of Wax Goods are simply the best in my opinion. Typically seen in TK Maxx if you’re lucky, they provide the most intense aroma. I may blog about interiors but you’ll RARELY see me recommend a brand of this home staple because I only spend money on potent candles that are good value for money. This brand always smell just like what they’re labelled as and are worth every penny. We treated ourself to the Pumpkin Rum candle in large (around £20) when we moved in the house this time last year, so it will always remind me of those first few chilly days unpacking boxes and settling in. This year, we’ve seen them again in store and stocked up, as that single candle lasted us through to the end of Winter last year so they’re excellent value for money. Other favourites from this brand include Coffee, Tobacco and Vanilla – all great for adding a bit of sweetness to the colder evenings.
Unleash the Coloured Glassware
Inspired by the crunchy leaves out the window, it’s easy to default to orange and tan-hued browns when we start touching upon the season of Fall, but ultimately anything which says “cosy” to you, in a deep, rich, and warm tone – that’s just perfect for October. Glassware is a great way to update with the seasons, and if you choose pieces with dual-purposes, you can use them all year round. The light will vary in intensity and warmth throughout the year, meaning as it hits your ornaments or vases, they’ll always match the mood of the weather. Purples and dusky pinks are a great way to counteract that cooler light we see in the dewy mornings of October – and on those sunnier autumn days when the sun hits low, it can give you the most stunning rays of lavender as it hits the wall. We have an arrangement of purple glass and pink décor on our “jazzberry” fireplace, which means it’s a symphony of violet when the light makes an appearance.

Faux Greenery in Mossy Tones
Just as in Spring, we see an explosion of nature-inspired elements make their way indoors. Plants of any form bring so much life into a room – literally in many cases. But as leafy trees transition into bare branches, we yearn for those natural elements more than ever, whether we realise it or not. It’s a sad truth then, that many of us kill real plants as a result of the central heating being switched on! Instead, I fake it with olive green choices in the Autumn. I have a small but very well loved collection of faux florals and plants which I circulate around the house throughout the months. The draping moss seen above costs me only £2 if memory serves me well, from Country Baskets a few years back. In Spring, they sit proudly against neons and brightly coloured artwork, but for now, they pair with my dusky and inky shades in the lounge – and lucky you, a sneaky peak of my DIY hex wall and brand new mid-century sideboard. I urge you to pick up some faux flowers or even a few little stems of something (I have fake pom pom branches which I adore), and they will keep giving every year, without needing to continually buy expensive flowers by the vase-full, as lovely as it is.
And that’s really all we do! Little changes from “shopping our own stash” and I promise you, a change in season doesn’t need to be a huge overhaul or costly endeavor. I’d love to be one of those people who has a wreath on the door for every season but I may DIY it at some point with my daughter. And you know what, when in doubt, a cute knitted pumpkin goes a long way and will last a lifetime.
Thanks to Soho Home for gifting the beautiful purple glassware, but all other items are from my own personal Narnia cupboard of interiors. What are your Autumn favourites? Do you have a non-traditional colour which makes you feel all cosy at this time of year?
